Doesn’t this sound suspiciously like yet another path to censorship? I suspect this additional feature of author contracts is the brain child of some extremist shareholder thinking–after all, the reading public already knows how to censor itself–don’t buy the book, don’t read it, don’t recommend it…
On the other hand, perhaps HarperCollins is setting themselves up to get weeded out of the publishing business during this confusing time of transition. This provides yet another reason for authors to look elsewhere for book publication, and readers for alternate resources.
What’s next? Will the publisher try to get readers to sign ‘morality’ contracts before purchasing their books?
